Beating the Odds: Athena

by Liz McCullough

Baby Athena has been beating the odds since before she was born.

Keara, Athena’s mom, was actually told she would never be able to get pregnant; and if she did, she wouldn’t stay pregnant.

Enter Athena, the miracle fighter.

Keara hemorrhaged 5 times in her first trimester, but Athena kept beating the odds.

Keara went into labor on Christmas morning. After 5 days, Athena decided she definitely wanted to be a 2022 baby. She was born on December 30th, weighing just 1 pound, 3 ounces.

During her 161 days in the NICU, Athena beat 4 infections, including meningitis, and survived a brain bleed. She was intubated for 46 days, on CPAP for 62 days, and has since only needed a little oxygen to breathe on her own.

The little 1 pound, 3 ounce fighter has grown to 8 pounds, 12 ounces. She’s once again beaten odds. Last week, the family busted out of the NICU and their RMG apartment and headed home!

“Your organization did so much for us. Having our own space to breathe was so vital to me and her dad being okay for her. We had the space for our support people and family, as well.”

We have enjoyed watching Athena grow and getting to know her wonderful parents. We are so very happy for them to finally be together as a family in their own home!
